Science Week Gimnazjum nr 14

Last week was a WEEK WITH SCIENCE in Gimnazjum nr 14 in Ruda Śląska. Students participated in various events. A group of students participated in a competition organized by the City Council for young ecologists and they won the main prize – a trip top Vienna! On 22nd April in our school third and second classes prepared some chemistry experiments for our younger friends. We had got a lot of nice ideas what to do. Class IIIA made a “storm in a tube”, others had got interesting experiments, too.
There was maths, physics and chemistry competition organized on 22nd April. We had 45 minutes to do 40 exercises. Some questions were quite difficult:-) Some other students went on a trip to planetarium and another group had a meeting with an expert – it was devoted to the topic of ecology. All these events made us think more positively about science!

World Book and Copyright Day

23rd April is celebrated as World Book and Copyright Day. This yearly event is organized by UNESCO to 'pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors, encouraging everyine, in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading'. What's the connection beteewen 23rd april and books? It all started in Spain as a way to honour Miguel Cervantes (he died on that day). The day is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare. Various events are organized to celebrate this day. In our school we had a radio programme and we prepared an exhibition in the hall.

Although not all of us are bookworms, we agree with Ch. W. Eliot who wrote: "Books are the quietest and most constant of friends, they are the most accessible and wisests of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers".

Learning animal idioms

As April is devoted to the topic of TOP ANIMALS we thought it would be good to learn some animal idioms. To remember them well we illustrated them and created some teaching aids. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between English and Polish idioms. So in Polish you can be as stubborn as a donkey while in English - as stubborn as a mule. In Polish you are advised not to buy a cat in a poke - and as you know - the English suggest not buying a pig in a poke.

Slovenian answers to the questionnaire about computers

Tests taken: 14
Age: 14

Sex: Female
After we've filled the questionnaires about computers, we found out that we rarely or never play computer games, but if we do, we play them for one hour or less. If we can’t play we don’t mind or care about it. Some of us said that we switch on computer when we get home, some after they do their homework and some in the evening. To the question about our favourite PC game, most of us said none, some said Soliter and some Sims. We all agreed that we use our computers also for emails, chat, homework, music, films and newspaper or magazines. In the end we found out that we’re not addicted to computer games, neither are we their biggest fans... by Nika L.

Some Easter inspirations

These photos were taken by my friend - she knows I want to share everything with my eTwinnig friends so she sent me her photos to inspire you:-)

Some Polish Easter traditions

Some time ago we published quite a detailed presentation about Polish Lent and Easter traditions. Today I'd like to present two customs typical to our country. One of them is related to Holy Saturday. On this day we go to church with so called "święconka". It is a basket containing some Easte foods, like bread, ham, meat, eggs, salt, horseradish, an Easter Lamb (a sweet one) and preists bless them. Than on Easter Sunday we share this blessed food among family members.

Another custom is related to Easter Monday. It's called śmigus - dyngus or Wet Monday in Polish. On this day girls are being oured with water by men. At least it used to be so in the past. Nowadays, men often simply sprinkle some perfume on women's heads, which is in fact sometimes worse then being poured with water as you then feel the mix of e.g. 6 perfumes on your head:-)
