The end of Carnival and the beginning of Lent are marked by following celebrations in Poland:
a) Fat Thursday - the last Thursday before Lent - on this day we eat lots of doughnuts or sweets called "faworki"
b)"ostatki' (śledź - herring) - Tuesday before Lent - on this day people go out and enjoy themselves on parties which finish before midnight; it's typical to eat herring this day (the presence of herring on this day had a long tradition as peoplke didn't use to eat meat during Lent)
c) Ash Wednesday - many people go to church on this day and ashes are placed on their forehead as a sign of the repentance
